Harvest Time

It’s harvest time in Iowa, and the farmers are in their combines and trucks. Mike is running a combine for a neighbor as they bring in the corn. Talk about a solitary life-farmers have a lot of time to think. Many use autosteer, and their thoughts must wander. What do they think about?

Dr. Bernie S. Siegel said, “We are all here to follow a path. The path is about how you contribute love to the world in a sense, how you imitate God.” Following this line of thought, I think that when farmers’ thought wander, they first think about their family and others they love, and yes, I believe they think a lot about God: how their field is producing, how the earth allows them to grow things, and how God will provide.

I am so blessed to be in a farming communtiy to be able to participate fully in the seasons. “For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.” (Dt. 16:15)

So to farmers, hats off to you! You are folowing your path, loving your work, producing necessary grain, and serving the Lord.

Lord, watch over these men and women as they harvest. Protect them from harm, and help us all follow your path of love. Amen.
