Morgan and I accompanied Mike into the field today, where he runs the combine for a neighbor. While the harvest of crops is taking place all across the Midwest, Jesus talked of a different kind of harvest, a harvest of our souls. Captured in John 4: 34-38,
“My food”, said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields. They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. The saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
As farmers labor to harvest the crops, let’s remember the unbelievable harvest that Jesus spoke of. While crops take much time to ripen and be ready for their harvest, Jesus let the disciples know that the time for the harvest of souls was the present.
Eternal life was and is being offered–ETERNAL LIFE! Wow!
Lord of life, thank you for your gift of eternal life. Of all the blessings that you have showered us with, this is truly overwhelming, and impossible for us to comprehend in our present lives. We will work for your glory, and spread the good news of Jesus. Amen.
Thank you, Sarah, for reminding me of the connection of “harvest” with Harvest. Wow, indeed! What a gift! Eternal life that begins now!
